It has now been over a week now since I accepted the position to be an intern here at 8BIT. Wow, what a week! I really hit the ground running as soon as I replied YES to the offer letter. It all happened so fast! I wish I had a little more time to savor the moment.
Getting a look behind the scenes was probably highest on my wish list for joining. Nothing like stealing trade secrets or a never-ending gobstopper. I’m talking about the relationships and opportunity to get to know these guys even more. Little did I know how intense the conversations would be.
Our conversations are so unfiltered, but yet so loving all at the same time. Everything is said with complete honesty and passion. You have an idea? Great! They are welcome, but you better be prepared to back it up. It rivals what I have read about how Apple was during Steve Job’s rule, except John doesn’t wear black turtle necks. It’s all about making each other better at what we do and encouraging one another as well. This is crucial and a large part of the culture. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I knew going into the internship that I would get some of the less sexy responsibilities. One of these is ordering unicorn snot on ebay for Chris’s hair. Thankfully, I’ll spend more time being the first point of contact in the Support Forums. 8BIT has always taken pride in the community and I am well aware of the shoes I have to fill by taking Michael’s role. Even still, I had no idea the number of requests for help we get and I now have way more respect for my predecessor! It’s a big responsibility, but I’m up for the challenge.
Which leads me to the following question.
Where, Exactly, Do I Fit On This Team?
I think I add a level of enthusiasm and positivity. Chris is the one who gives hugs, so I hope to compliment them with words of encouragement. I tend to enter into new things with expectation and optimism. This is the same for my profession and my faith. I’m coming into this experience hoping to impact lives.
- The lives of my teammates.
- The lives of our customers.
I hope to bring new ideas to the team and help bring the existing ones to fruition. These guys have been inspirational to me and I want to repay the effort in whatever way I can. I’ve already inspired Tom to create a custom meme for me.
What Can You Expect From Me?
- A continued top notch level of support in the forums.
- A maturity in composing blog posts from me over time.
- A refined quality in the code that I write and the designs that I implement.
Week one was awesome and I’m sure week two is going to be twice as nice! There’s also some more good news, we are looking for another intern. You know you want to join me. Come on…everyone’s doing it!
